The Pink Floyd Experience – June 2021 – Napier

Review by Rob Harbers. Photography by Reef Reid.

Continuing a habit they have been involved in for nearly 25 years, the Pink Floyd Experience are currently touring a show based on “The Wall”, with an appetiser of the “Animals” album. Having wound their way through the country, they are coming to the end of the trail, with dates in Tauranga, Hamilton and Auckland closing out this sojourn.

As a general rule, cover bands don’t fall within the purview of Ambient Light, but given the nature of this production, such rules go out the window. The Pink Floyd Experience take pride in reproducing the sound, feel and atmosphere of the original band, bringing to new generations an appreciation for this iconic and influential music.

As I’ve seen this band many times over the years, to the extent that they’ve made me get far more into Pink Floyd than I ever was before encountering them, my perspective is possibly somewhat skewed and less than impartial, so my plus-one tonight has given me the benefit of the impressions of one who has less enjoyed than endured the source material.

The show commenced with a clever and humorous visual element, which I won’t spoil for you, but soon we were hearing the familiar acoustic intro of “Pigs On The Wing 1” leading the way into a note-perfect rendition of the full “Animals” album, enhanced by a stream of visuals projected on the large screen, which complemented the lyrical themes of the songs. The screen was a hugely effective device, as it enabled the players to be seen behind it, while providing the aforementioned visual enhancement, and being the focal point of a dramatic moment in itself (look out for it!). Bonus content before intermission came in the form of “Welcome To The Machine”, giving the purists something extra to please their ears.

After the brief refuelling break, the lights went down and the opening bars of “In The Flesh” rolled out across the arena, accompanied by some visual surprises, which all served to alert the audience that some serious entertainment was coming their way. Lead vocalist and showman extraordinaire Stan Gratkowski then proceeded to lead us through the full masterwork that is “The Wall”, accompanied by a band whose passion for the music they play was hugely evident. The presentation in this format brought out the narrative thread of the album, enhancing its unifying concept. To provide too much description would be at the risk of giving away too much of what awaits you if you go, and I don’t want to be that spoiler guy! I’ll just say that my plus-one described it as a true rock opera and a real show, one which she would see again. High praise indeed from one considerably more casual about the source material than I am.

The crowd, while being (disappointingly) considerably below the venue’s capacity, were nevertheless hugely responsive and appreciative of the production, and drawn from a wide age demographic, showing the enduring place that Pink Floyd hold in many lives, and the appreciation that this troupe inspire.

To give you too many more words would put me in danger of over-egging the pudding, (and push me even further past deadline!) so I’ll give you an executive summary: If you’re a fan of Pink Floyd, go to this show if you can – you’ll appreciate the skill with which the music is recreated. If you’re the significant other of a fan, forced to endure the music over your time together, try going along too – it just might enhance your appreciation of what they’ve been trying to tell you all this time! If you’re havering over whether to go or not, just do it, you’ll have no regrets. If you’re any degree of fan or fan-adjacent, you owe it to yourself to see this show. In short, might you like to go to the show? You would, and you’ll bathe in the space-cadet glow! Go and glow!!!

Dark Side Of The Moon (2022)

The Pink Floyd Experience – Live @ The Bruce Mason Theatre, Auckland 2019

The Pink Floyd Experience, not to be mistaken with any other cover band, have paid a great tribute to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of The Wall.

Words by Monique Ohlson | Photos by Radar Photography

With the entire band on stage with just about every instrument known to man, lead vocalist and also acoustic guitarist Stan Gratkowski, comes out onto the stage ready to take on the night and does he what. But without the whole band, he wouldn’t be who he is and it wouldn’t be the fantastic performance that we saw tonight. Sounding so similar to the original Pink Floyd, I am pleasantly surprised that really it doesn’t sound too different and get comfortable to listen for the rest of the evening.

Lighting, smoke machine, the crowd getting right into it, The Pink Floyd Experience have as expected everything that you could think of to make sure it lives up to the hype. Hanging front and centre on stage, is a round canvas to which film and visuals are displayed right throughout the night to help enhance just how theatrical the performance is.

Heart Felt Thanks

The Pink Floyd Experience would like to thank everybody who attended our 2017 Animals 40th Anniversary Tour shows.  After 20 years of performing Pink Floyd’s amazing music, we felt this was the best show we have delivered yet.  Playing three entire albums, Animals, Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon was a real highlight for us, as that’s how we first listened to Pink Floyd when growing up. Three complete albums, with playlists in the correct order, played through from start to finish!

We put a lot of time into planning how we could make each album have its own stage look and vibe while musically tying to stay as true to the original as possible.  We also had to be able to completely change from one look to another in 20 seconds. We spared no attention to detail and that really paid off with us getting rave reviews wherever we went.  The screen overlay used during Animals worked really well and the imagery was so relevant to the songs yet still very ‘Floydish’.

We had so much fun preparing this production and then performing 28 shows. 2017 will definitely be a highlight year for us. Also the feedback from the audience was incredible and has supercharged our enthusiasm for our next show celebrating the 40th Anniversary of The Wall in 2019.

Check out some of the photos from the Animals tour and don’t forget to visit us here regularly or visit our Facebook page for updates regarding The Wall Tour.

For those of you who may not know, we performed The Wall for a number of years until 2006. The show got us a lot of international attention and fantastic reviews in every country. We were even offered a two year world tour to perform the show.  Many people say it’s the best show we have ever done and some even say it’s the best show they have ever been to. Well, our next incarnation of The Wall is going to be all that on steroids! This show will be our best ever. See you there!!!

Nevtech Gnometronics

A self-confessed ‘cheeky little bugger’, Nev joined The Experience on our 10th Anniversary tour in 2007 after running away from his home in Invercargill. He originally persuaded his mate Doc to accompany him on his new adventures, however Doc was such a wuss that he piked out at Timaru and returned to Invercargill early without seeing his 10th Anniversary contract out!

Nev is only too happy to leave his goldfish pond in Invercargill to take up another contract with The Experience whenever the opportunity presents itself. He’s already done three NZ Tours and the lastBack Catalogue tour in Aussie. Nev loves touring, describing it as a ‘real blast’! He really enjoys life on the road, the late-night parties and, of course, what he refers to as the ‘three Gs’– Groupies, Grolsh beer and Germish bourbon – though not always in that order.

Not to put too fine a point on it, Nev is an absolute party animal when he tours. On his first tour with The Experience he drank so much Germish in one sitting that he vomited in Christchurch but, undeterred, he entered into the party spirit again in Palmerston North before falling off a table, ‘face planting’ and then literally breaking his arse! He finished that tour being rushed back to Wellington for urgent surgery and recuperation. Nev also fell off a lighting stack while touring in Aussie, we think he may have been smoking something funny up there but Nev has always blamed one of the lighting crew, who he says pushed him (he says he’s reporting the offender to the RSPCGG if it happens again).

When his contract was terminated at the end of last the tour Nev was sent back home to Invercargill to consider his future and an improvement in his attitude, but this time round we’re still looking for any positive sign that this has actually happened. For everyone’s sake we’re all just hoping that he’s calmed down a little bit, he’s becoming a bit of a liability.

We have suggested that Nev consider more wholesome pursuits then drinking and smoking during his down-time. Unfortunately he gave up his fishing pastime some years ago, as he never caught anything and the time was mostly spent in solitude sitting by an uninhabited goldfish pond in Invercargill and (occasionally) being pissed on by the neighbor’s cat. He’s considered taking up duck shooting but we’re not convinced that Nev can be left in charge of any firearms.

Since touring with the Pink Floyd Experience, Nev has set up a website detailing his experiences and life on the road with the band. As he says, it’s not all Grolsch, Germish and Groupies! Unfortunately this has been blacklisted by Nev’s ISP and we can’t say when (or if) Nev will be online again.

To keep him occupied and out of trouble between tours we once delegated Nev the task of updating the band’s blog page. Once again, this page appears to have disappeared, possibly due to Nev’s non-PC rantings and ravings. While we may agree with many of Nev’s views, a publicly accessible blog is perhaps not the best place to express them, especially while under the influence of Groslch, Germish or Grass (or Groupies for that matter).

Comments, feedback or ‘flames’ for Nev may be directed via the Talk To Us page on this website
